Pontine Islands
The Pontine Islands (Isole Pontine) are a wonderfull archipelago off the Italian coast south of Rome and north of Naples. With a long history, attested by Roman and pre-Roman ruins, the islands are nevertheless little-known to international tourists.
Ponza
Later colonized by the Romans, the island of Ponza is the most enchanting and popular of the Pontine Islands. This divine spot has a particularly healthy climate thanks to the iodine-rich breezes rising from the crystal clear sea and blending with the sun’s rays. The picturesque rocky shores are dramatically peppered with caves, grottoes and steep offshore crags.
Ventotene
This curious little island was founded around 300 BC as Roman colony and it was they who built the magnificent harbour at Pertuso Point, which greets you upon your arrival. For those seeking a laid back getaway from their hectic everyday lives, this sleepy refuge is rich with charms such as tiny fishing villages, sparkling waters and an unspoiled landscape.
Life on Ventotene is slow-paced and a bit self-indulgent and, although it may seem like paradise, this serene island has had a somewhat strange and turbulent history.
Palmarola
Palmarola is called "The Pearl of Mediterranean Sea".The island is still quite wild, and just 30 minutes by boat from Ponza. Best period to visit is June and September... when not too many tourists fill its crystal waters best way is of course a sailing yacht charter so you can sail around the isle's coasts and admire all the sceneries between the rocks and the caves.
Zannone
The most mysterious island, with a temple and an oracle in Roman Epoch. From 1979 is a part of Circeo National Park.
The island is uninhabited but supervised by the Forestry Service, which maintains a station and small educational exhibit on top of Monte Pellegrino, the highest point on the island.
