Giannutri Island
Giannutri is the southernmost island of the Tuscan Archipelago and is located about 6 miles south of the island of Giglio, whose borough.
The only Giannutri and 'long about 3 km wide and just over 500 meters, has an area of 2.3 km2, is C-shaped and has two berths: Cala Spalmatoio, south-east and Cala Maestra, in northwest.
The island is a nature reserve. In particular, a site of regional (SIR) is entirely contained in the Tuscan Archipelago National Park, a marine reserve over most of coastal development. The area is a Site of Community Importance (pSCI) that a Special Protection Area (SPA). To determine the protection of the area were the presence of endemic species, exclusive of the site or in the Tuscan Archipelago, and numerous other pieces of biogeographical interest, as, for example, forms sardo-corse.
Diving
The island has great interest for divers, thanks to the vertical walls are rich in corals, sponges, corals and tunicates. Today most of the seabed were listed as protected area of type 1 "(which are prohibited motor boats, sailing and rowing, fishing, diving and swimming) and then one side is favored the fish population, it also made it difficult to find good dive sites.
You can still find free diving the extensive seagrass meadows and two wrecks White dell'Anna (40-50 meters deep) and Nasim (60 meters).
Points of interest
Near Cala Maestra are the remains of a beautiful Roman villa of the second century AD, built by the family of Domizi Enobarbi ancient senatorial family of major retailers which was part Gnaeus Domitius, husband of Agrippina, mother of Emperor Nero.
Although the artistic and historical significance of the remains, the villa, until a few years ago in private hands, the Count Gualtiero Adami (known as Garibaldi) and then auctioned saved by Region and Ministry of Environment who exercised the right of first refusal. Currently closed for restoration.
The villa was built on higher ground than the Roman harbor of Cala Maestra.
Flora and Fauna
Interestingly, the floristic vegetation fitoalofila of Chrithmolimonietum sommieriani presence of endemic species as Limonium sommierianum Tyrrhenian and Helichrysum litoreum. They will add the timelea tricocca (cneorum tricoccon) species present in only three stations in Tuscany (Monte Argentario, and Montecristo islands Giannutri). The wildlife, the island is a major staging area during migration. There are rare bird species nesting or related to marine habitats and the rocky garrigue. Among them, the gull (Larus audouinii) is present along the island but there are signs of nesting in recent years, the Shearwater (Puffinus Yelkouan) nests with an unknown number of couples, the nun (Oenanthe hispanica) nests, perhaps on a regular basis, the Sardinian warbler (Sylvia sarda) is nesting, the Shag (Phalacrocorax Aristotelis) nests with 1-2 pairs. They must be added the breeding population of Cory's shearwater (Calonectris diomedea), separate unknown but certainly among the four largest of the Tuscan Archipelago.
Among reptiles, there are Phyllodactylus europaeus and there are occasional reports of turtles (Caretta caretta). They joins the presence of endemic invertebrates.
